Adiala Jail hold an important place in Pakistan's history. The jail has housed several notorious criminals, terrorists, militants, and many political leaders. Adiala Jail, which is 142-year-old has a long history. There are many hidden stories behind the walls of Adiala Jail.

What is the other name of Adiala Central Jail?

The Adiala Central Jail is also known as the Rawalpindi District Jail. Interestingly, the Adiala Central Jail, which is 142 years old, has been relocated several times in the history. Reportedly, the jail has been relocated as many four times. Earlier, when Rawalpindi used to be a small town, the jail was located near Committee Chowk, Teli Mohalla Road. Meanwhile, in 1882, the jail was rebuilt near Jinnah Park and the Judicial Complex. Talking about the jail infrastructure, it is spread over 84.4 acres, and it remained there for 104 years.

How was the Jail British Rule?

As it is well known that Adiala Central Jail has a long history. During the British era, freedom fighters were imprisoned in the Rawalpindi Jail. Not just this, many revolutionaries from Delhi, Hyderabad, and Dhaka were also imprisoned here. Among the list is Inayatullah Khan, also known as Allama Mashriqi. Notably, there is also a graveyard near the jail that has graves of many revolutionaries.

It is to be noted here that in 1986, a new Adiala Jail was built. The infrastructure of the jail consists of 100 acres, about 13 km from the Rawalpindi court. The capacity of the jail was earlier of 1,927 inmates, but later it was raised to 2,700 and then 3,500.

Interestingly, Adiala Jail is considered to be Pakistan’s most sensitive prison. Ahead of Imran Khan, many prime ministers and high-profile figures were kept here. Some of them in the list are Nawaz Sharif, Yousuf Raza Gilani, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, former President Asif Ali Zardari, current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz have all been imprisoned here.
